farewell fluff

it’s official.  no more cloth diapering for us.  it makes me really sad.

we decided to cloth diaper before we even started trying to have kids.  we knew it would save us money, nick’s mom had done it, and we’d heard cloth diapers had come a long way.  i did research on what kinds to use before we got pregnant and then found great info on [diaperswappers.com] – a site full of forums about cloth diapering.

we decided to go the most economical route and purchase unbleached indian prefolds and thirsties covers even though i wanted all the “fancy” ones.  we also recieved some gdiapers as a gift and i used cloth inserts in them.

all went well for a good two months.  i LOVED it and didn’t mind the extra laundry either.  those covers held in her most explosive poos (she only goes every 3-4 days, so they’re huge).  it really wasn’t that much extra work and i felt so good knowing i was saving money and putting soft fluffiness next to her skin. derma mom

first of all, this blogging more often thing is a bit more difficult than i thought it would be.  up until now i was home almost all the time, but last week we had an outing almost every day.  funny how one short outing can eat up the entire day!  guess that’s how it goes with a little one.

i also could write every entry about being a mom.  so many things to talk about.  today – skin issues.

on friday at mariah’s two month check up i asked about the multiple skin “issues” she’s been having.  he ever so kindly told me that as a redhead she is destined to have sensitive skin.  we then proceeded to go through each problem one by one:

Baby Acne

at week 3 it came on full force, her face and scalp were covered with gross pimples (yes, oozy whiteheads and all).  they quickly transitioned into red bumps, and everyone reassured me it was normal and it would go away on its own soon.  well they were finally gone at 7 weeks.  however she gets a little flare up some days.

the doctor told me just what i had read:  not to put anything on it, just keep it clean.  but i then learned that when i’m getting my omega-3’s it helps her skin stay clear.  and i can see how that is true.  i’d gotten bad at taking my fish pills, and the day after i had a salmon burger her skin was perfect.  now i’m back to three fish pills a day.

Cradle Cap

just as her face was looking a bit better (as in the picture above – yes, that was better) she developed a flaky/scaly scalp.  great!  it’s doing better due to our managing it, though not completely gone. (more…)
