shoe saga part I

// March 25th, 2010 // No Comments » // house to home, organization

each day as we head out to work, the three of us are crammed into the world’s tiniest entryway. we have to shuffle around putting on shoes. one of us can open the door and go out and then the door has to be almost closed again for the next person to exit. confusing i know, but it’s a mess.

living in minnesota means shoes are not worn in the house. so in our teeny little entryway are a dozen or more pairs of shoes to trip over. we put together some IKEA as is pieces for a make shift shoe rack a long time ago. last year for valentine’s day we purchased the shelf, vase and photo to try and spruce things up a bit. but  it was time for a change.

so we finally purchased the HEMNES shoe cabinet from IKEA to help cut down on the clutter. i’m in love with how it looks. hiding all our shoes is fantastic!

my handyman working hard.

final result. clutter free.

organization: shoes and purses

i’ve been wanting to take on this project for quite some time. over the past week my closet floor has looked like this thanks to a little crawling someone who thinks it’s funny to play with mommy’s shoes.

normally it’s not that bad. nick has some pants down there and my old ballet leotards and skirts made it to the floor with everything. usually it’s like this:

oh what? you can’t tell a difference?  hmmm…..yeah, it usually doesn’t look very good.

i started with the purses. those were over there in the right corner. (more…)

house to home: master bedroom

// January 3rd, 2010 // No Comments » // house to home

we’ve lived in our house for almost four years now. over those four years we’ve slowly added new furniture, decorations etc. since purchasing everything right away was a little expensive.

i don’t always believe everything oprah says, but i do agree with her when she says your bedroom should be your sanctuary. so this weekend we made some improvements to our bedroom, and i finally feel like it’s complete. well, almost. i still want a full length mirror.

this photo is from september of 2006. not much of a sanctuary at all is it?

sometime between then and now i took on my first sewing project and made curtains out of ikea sheets. we changed the pillow covers to red and put up pictures of us on the shelves. the shelves are actually drawer fronts from the as-is section of ikea that we placed on some shelving brackets.  always, always check the as-is section!  we bought 3 out of our 6 dining room chairs that way!

i recently did some more ikea shopping and purchased bedside lamps and an underbed box for storage. then for christmas we bought a new duvet cover. the light color is still growing on me since we’ve had the darker one for so long. we also purchased a monogram decal to fill the empty space over the bed. i purchased it from {this etsy shop} now our bedroom looks like this:

it also helps that my camera is awesome now.

now when i go into my bedroom, it just feels so welcoming, relaxing and best of all – complete. *sigh* well, that is when the bed is made; we’re not so great at making the bed.

i hope to post a few times a month to show how we’ve transformed our house into a home. i love reading other’s blogs to see what they’ve been up to, so i hope i can inspire someone else. or at least let you see my home.
